Diabetes mellitus: the trace element connection.
نویسنده
چکیده
Diabetes mellitus was known to the ancient Greeks who more or less correctly assumed that the victim was literally urinating (Greek o u p o v, urine) himself away. Since 1674, when Sir Thomas Willis suggested that diabetics should have gummy and starchy food, a lot has been written. Satisfactory adequately controlled studies have yet to be done to establish the role of trace elements in the pathogenesis of diabetes mellitus and many studies have lead to contradictory findings and controversial conclusions. In some cases the disease is associated with metal abnormallties and in some of these, correction of the abnormality would affect a cure. Much work, however, remains to be done to pin—point these cases.

Study of Lipid Peroxidation, Nitric Oxide End Product, and Trace Element Status in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus with and without Complications
BACKGROUND Oxidative stress has become a real entity in etiopathogenesis of Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM). It may result from steady flux of free radicals and lipid peroxides in vivo. Malondialdehyde (MDA) is a stable end product of lipid peroxidation. Accumulative evidences suggest that hyperglycemia in Type 2 DM can produce major changes in nitric oxide (NO) production as well as in its actio...
متن کاملTrace element analysis of hair, nail, serum and urine of diabetes mellitus patients by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy
Background: Trace elements play important roles in carbohydrates and lipids metabolism. According to some studies, trace elements concentrations are different in serum and urine of diabetic and healthy population. In this work, for the first time six trace elements (Zn, Cu, Mg, Mn, Cr, Se) concentration of scalp hair, nail, urine and serum of diabetes mellitus patients and control group were an...
متن کاملTrace and toxic element patterns in nonsmoker patients with noninsulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, impaired glucose tolerance, and fasting glucose
PROJECT Noninsulin dependent diabetes mellitus is supposed to be associated with fluctuations in the plasma levels of several trace elements. There is accumulating evidence that the metabolism of several trace elements is altered in patients with noninsulin dependent diabetes mellitus and that these nutrients might have specific roles in the pathogenesis and progression of this disorder. PROC...
متن کاملCellular Trace Element Changes in Type 1 Diabetes Patients
OBJECTIVE Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) may lead to deficiencies in trace elements that have substantial functions in the human organism. Changes in serum magnesium (Mg), copper (Cu), and zinc (Zn) levels are correlated with metabolic control and diabetes complications. The aim of this study was to evaluate the intra-erythrocyte levels of trace elements and urinary Mg excretion following intr...

OBJECTIVE THE AIM OF THE STUDY To evaluate the correlations between Zn2+, Cu2+, Mg2+, Se2+ and Cr3+ and alteration in T cell subsets during diabetic and normal pregnancy. METHODS The study involved 63 women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GD) and 16 pregnant women with Type 2 diabetes and 48 healthy, non-pregnant women were included as controls. Ten ml of whole venous blood from each p...
